BOTOX® is often touted for its cosmetic benefits, but there are several other uses for this treatment you may not have considered. Interestingly, many of these treatments were discovered inadvertently in patients who were receiving BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons.

BOTOX® works by repeatedly contracting certain muscles, like those around your mouth and eyes, that lead to fine lines and wrinkles over time. When these muscles are injected with small amounts of a pure botulinum toxin protein created from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum, they are temporarily slowed down. With this reduced muscle activity, patients begin to notice the fine lines and wrinkles in these areas begin to soften.

But as it turns out, this isn’t all some patients noticed after receiving BOTOX® treatments!

Today, there are several FDA-approved uses for BOTOX® you may never have heard of.

Here are three of them.

Migraines: In 2010, BOTOX® was approved for use in treating migraines. Typically, this treatment involves 31 injections in the head and neck. The neurotransmitters that carry pain to the head and neck are thought to be blocked by the appropriate administration of BOTOX®, which can ultimately lead to fewer and less severe migraines.

Overactive Bladder: Another FDA-approved use for BOTOX® is treating overactive bladder. Studies have been published that say 75% of women treated with BOTOX® for overactive bladder experienced an improvement in their symptoms. Often, results are seen within a few days and may last up to nine months before needing another treatment.

Excessive Underarm Sweating: BOTOX® was approved for use in treating excessive underarm sweating in 2004. This came after doctors noticed their patients who received BOTOX® on their face and head were sweating less. In addition to working on underarm sweating, many people use BOTOX® to treat excessive sweating of the hands and feet as well.
