Face washing is a pretty simple concept at its core, but with all of the products available to us today and how much we now know about skin, there’s a lot more to it than just splashing water on our face.
To help make sure you’re getting the most from your face washing routine, here are four useful tips as well as suggestions for the best products for your skin.
Use Warm Water: As refreshing as cold water on your face might be or as cleansing as you think hot water on your skin can be, it’s actually best to use warm water. When water is warm, it can still help soften your makeup and other residue without irritating your skin like hot water can.
Consider Your Cleanser: Not all skincare products are created equal, and this is especially true when it comes to cleansers. Different skin types will benefit from different types of cleansers so it’s important you are using the right product for your skin. Sensitive or dehydrated skin? A cream or oil cleanser might be best for you. On the other hand, if you have oily and acne prone skin, a gel cleanser with salicylic acid might be right for you.
Cleanse First: Skincare products work best when they’re used in the right order, because they can work off of the benefits they provide as you layer them on.
The first step should always be to cleanse your skin. Next, you’ll tone and then use your serum and eye cream. You should then apply any treatments (i.e., spot treatments, retinol, peels) and then add your moisturizer. During the day, the last step of your skincare routine should be applying sunscreen. At night, you’ll finish with your moisturizer or night cream.
Reevaluate Your Routine: As we age, our skincare needs change. While you may have been focused on fighting acne in your younger years, perhaps now your focus is on anti-aging. It’s important to regularly reevaluate your skincare routine to make sure the products you’re using accurately address your concerns.
